The concert included a World Première of Spring, the concluding part of Edward Cowie's The Four Seasons. CC21 jointly comissioned this exciting new work with the Oxford choir Commotio. The concert also included Le Jeune's Revecy venir du printemps, Morley's April is in my mistress' face, Moeran's Songs of Springtime and Britten's 5 Flower Songs, Op.47.

Before Messiah, we performed Music for a Summer's Evening, on July 11th 2009 at the Grosvenor Chapel in Mayfair. This concert incuded the World Premiere of Edward Cowie's Summer, from Four Seasons, a joint commission with Commotio in Oxford.

Music for a Summer's Evening

Edward Cowie's Summer is the second episode in his choral portrayal of the Four Seasons, but is the first to be performed. The concert on July 11th 2009 marked the launch of the four-part commission, shared by CC21 and the Oxford Choir Commotio, who will give the premiere of Winter on December 5th, 2009.

Here's a few words from our Conductor, Howard Williams, on the programme content of Music for a Summer's Evening:

"Presenting a programme of music in which the word Summer appears in every single choral title might seem suspiciously like an exercice in mere tidiness (or perhaps the response to a wager), were it not for the delight that each piece offers to the listener and performer. If that is more of a bonus, however, then the underlying reason lies in my desire to give Edward Cowie's new seasonal work an appropriate context, in which the light and moods of summer resonate through the work of a variety of composers. To enhance further the setting for the new work, I have chosen to include works for solo harp, an instrument which has a special place in Edward's musical language and output."
